2008 graduate Scott Welsh has received the National Scholastic Art & Writing “Gold Key” award from The Alliance for Young Artist & Writers. A ceremony was held in New York City on June 12 where Scott received his award.More that 77,000 students across the nation in grades 7-12 participated by submitting over 100,000 works to be judged by creative industry professionals. Only 1,200 students nationwide were award the "Gold Key" medallion. His winning entry will be on display at various New York City art museums for the next two years before it will return to North Carolina.

For details visit caryhigh1988.com.• Patrick Salked has been selected to attend the 2008 Congressional Student Leadership Conference on Medicine & Healthcare at Georgetown University, sponsored by LeadAmerica. Patrick is active in NJROTC and athletic training at Cary High School and attends Greenwood Forest Baptist Church in Cary. The conference is a college-accredited invitational leadership program for academically talented and promising young leaders from across the United States and internationally. Patrick will join other exceptional high school students with records of academic achievement and extracurricular or community involvement who are invited to participate.

William Schlieper was part of a team of 15 students from across North Carolina who placed third in the nation at the 33rd Annual American Regions Mathematics League meet May 31.Cary Academy
John Nelson (’08), Arjun Chandran (’08), Ben Goldhaber (’08) and Firoz Jameel (’09) were Cary Academy's representatives at the National Forensic League’s national tournament held in Las Vegas on June 15-20. In competition, Nelson broke to the top 60 out of almost 300 foreign extemp champions from around the country. Chandran was the only undefeated Lincoln-Douglas debater (out of 221) after 14 rounds, and placed fourth overall. Jameel started in a field of over 440 commentary competitors (extemp, sitting down), and went five rounds to make it to the top 60.• Tyler Ford (’08) and Hannah Kisley (’11) competed at the 2008 Nike Outdoor High School Track & Field Championships held June 19-21 in Greensboro. Ford jumped 38 feet in the triple jump, just 10 inches shy of her personal best and school record, to finish 17th out of 42 competitors. In the long jump she finished fourth, earning All- American honors. Kisley is an elite race walker. Competing in her second Nike Outdoor Championships, Kisley had a very strong showing in the one-mile race walk to finish seventh overall. She bested her 2007 time by 23 seconds.
