Adams Elementary received a $3,000 grant award from the Cary Community Foundation that the school will use to purchase six commercial-grade, handicap accessible picnic tables. The tables will be placed underneath the Shelter for All situated on campus adjacent to the Miracle League site.
“We hope to have the Shelter for All constructed this winter and open for use by April 11, the Miracle League opening day,” said Douglas Hooper, principal of Adams Elementary.
The Shelter for All exemplifies how schools and nonprofit organizations can work together on projects to benefit the entire community.
The 30-foot-by-30-foot structure will serve Adams students as an outdoor classroom and fitness program site during school hours, YMCA after-school program and Adams running club in the afternoons and Miracle League families on the weekends. The cost for the Shelter for All is $25,000.
Funds for the shelter were raised through parent donations, a matching grant from the Wake County Public School System and grants from the Cary Community Foundation and Lowes.
“We are still short $5,000 for the concrete base and are actively looking for donations,” said Barbara Walsh, Adams’ PTA grant coordinator and parent of three Adams students.
