The Cary Post 67 Senior Legion baseball team and Proehlific Power barely got things started Sunday night when lightning forced a delay. But after a more than 20-minute recess, it was Proehlific that struck next, scoring eight runs in the second inning en route to a 10-1 victory.

Proehlific — a mostly collegiate-level team out of Greensboro — didn’t score again, but the inclement weather was not finished. In the top of the seventh, another round of lightning forced another delay and, eventually, the calling of the game.

The game ended just in time, as buckets of rain soon sloshed all over the Triangle for the rest of the night. Ross Snotherly scored the lone run for Cary, as he belted one out of the park in the bottom of the second inning. Cary earned four hits for the game, as Brian Rhino and Hunter Carr both recorded singles and Wyatt Medlin had a double.

Meanwhile, Proehlific Power had 15 hits, and four players chipped in RBIs during the second-inning hit parade.

Although it was a topsy turvy way to conclude the regular season for Cary, coach Neil Woodall said the chance for his players to go against collegiate talent was a valuable one.

Also, after the second-inning fallout, Proehlific never had more than two hits in an inning.

“To give our guys a chance to see what the next level is like, I wanted to play these guys,” Woodall said.

For instance, outfielder and Cary High graduate Brian Rhino will head to UNC-Wilmington in the fall to play baseball for the Seahawks and will face competition similar to what he saw on Sunday.

“I thought it was a great experience to see such good talent,” Rhino said. “It’ll be a preview of what I’m going to see next year.”

In the meantime, with the regular season complete, Cary will next focus on the playoffs, which are slated to begin July 10.

It’s yet to be determined whom Cary will face, as several teams have not finished conference schedules.

But after a regular season where Cary went 16-9 overall and 5-3 in conference play, Woodall has been pleased with the progress the team has shown, especially considering it was the first year for five players.

“We’re a very young team. It excites me about the possibilities for next year,” Woodall said. “This team has done a tremendous job of coming together from the four we represented [Cary, Wake Christian, Green Hope, Athens Drive high schools].”
