Garner 25, Middle Creek 20
Garner rebounded from a shutout loss to Millbrook in its opener last week to capture a hard-fought victory at Middle Creek in a nonconference game. The Trojans held off a late Middle Creek rally to even their record at 1-1. Middle Creek dropped to 0-2.

Enloe 24, Athens Drive 21
Josh Senegal came off the bench to rush for 158 yards and teammate David Highsmith added 155 to lead Enloe past Athens Drive 24-21 Friday. The game was delayed for one hour because of lightning. There were also several minor injuries in the second half. With the Eagles down 15-13 midway through the fourth quarter, Senegal led them on a 71-yard drive, accounting for 49 of the yards and the go-ahead points on a 3-yard run. Senegal added the conversion run to put Enloe ahead for good.

Apex 28, Broughton 14
After building a 28-7 lead early in the third quarter, Apex held off a charging Broughton team to win a game that was delayed an hour by lightning. Leading 8-7 just before the delay, the Cougars came out clawing when play resumed, scoring 13 straight points to take a 21-7 lead at the half. Apex scored on a brilliant 33-yard strike from quarterback Houston Hawley to Brandon Carr and a 20-yard TD after a lateral from Hawley to running back Kevin Fogg, who then threw to a streaking Rob Fronk for the score. Apex made it 20 straight points when a 60-yard kickoff return by Fogg put the team at the Broughton 41. After a dazzling, 38-yard scamper by Fogg down the middle to the 3-yard line, Hawley dove in for what appeared to be a commanding lead.

Wakefield 28, Holly Springs 21
Leading by a point with under two minutes to play and facing a fourth-and-32, Holly Springs had Wakefield right where it wanted it. Quarterback Drew Wilkinson tossed a screen pass to Mychal Jones, who picked up a pretty block and raced 73 yards to a touchdown that lifted the Wolverines to a dramatic 28-21 victory over Holly Springs. Holly Springs (0-2) had one last chance but failed to pick up a fourth-and-18 from the Wakefield 29 in the final seconds of the game.
