FAYETTEVILLE — Cary High found out the difference between the first and second round of the playoffs quickly Friday night against Fayetteville Seventy-First High.

The holes that were open in the Imps’ first-round win over New Bern High a week earlier weren’t there as their season ended in a 43-20 loss to Fayetteville Seventy-First.

The Falcons advance to the third round for the first time since 1994 and play at Garner High on Friday. Cary finishes its season at 7-6.

“The slogan around here was one and done in the playoffs,” Fayetteville Seventy-First coach Bob Paroli said. “So last week we dwelled on that. One and done has to be a thing of the past.”

The Falcons won the game on the ground, with two backs rushing for more than 100 yards each. Jamal Shuman finished with 107 yards on 18 carries, while Donta Young had 100 yards and three touchdowns.

Meanwhile, the Imps couldn’t repeat their success on the ground from the previous week.

Cary only had 62 yards rushing compared to Fayetteville Seventy-First’s 297. The Falcon defense sacked Cary quarterback Kendall Smith four times.

“Their defense is solid,” Cary coach Ben Kolstad said. “We just couldn’t make the plays when we needed to.” Seventy-First scored on its first three possessions, the first of which came on a fourth-down conversion by Shuman with an 11-yard run.

After forcing Cary to a three-and-out on offense, Seventy-First took a two-touchdown lead with Feliz Diaz’s a 23-yard throw to Brandon Bibbs. The Falcons’ two-point conversion was good for a 14-0 lead.

Young’s 14-yard touchdown scamper gave his team extra cushion — a 22-0 lead late in the first half.

“They were one step ahead of us the whole game,” Kolstad said. “That’s a really good football team.”

Cary ended the shutout early in the third quarter with a 13-yard TD pass from Smith to Teddy Tamre.
