APEX — The Apex girls’ lacrosse team has been blistering opponents this season, winning every one of its seven matches so far by double digits.
Thursday was no exception, as the Cougars trounced visiting Cary 15-1 to stretch its unbeaten streak to 15 games, dating back to last year’s state championship season.
Apex (7-0) was led by senior Sasha Vedock’s two goals, and 14 different Cougars scored.
This week is when Apex should receive its litmus test.
The Cougars face Virginia power Bishop Ireton on Wednesday before heading to the greater Atlanta area to meet three Georgia teams. They play Walton on Friday then face Chattahoochee and Milton on Saturday.
“That will be the first real test,” said Apex coach Jay Faulhaber. “If the girls play the way we know they can play consistently without any breakdown, then I know we can do well.”
Though it may be hard to see from a team that has outscored its opponents 120-34 so far this season, there are a few minor areas in which Apex can improve as it strives for another championship run.
“We can always work on our ball control and making sure that players find openings,” Faulhaber said.
This week could paint a better picture as to how good this squad really is, as they will be challenged by four out-of-state foes.
“Our girls are obviously really excited for that,” said assistant coach Rob Bromley.
Apex received a bit of a scare late in the match against Cary when junior Danielle Delponte went down with 12 seconds left with an injury. The game was called at that point.
“She was coming down the side and someone’s foot hit hers, rolled it (her knee),” said.
At the time, the extent of the injury had yet to be determined, Faulhaber said.
