The Panther Creek soccer team is making the most of its first playoff appearance.

The second-year Catamounts upended Chapel Hill 1-0 in overtime Friday to move into the third round of the NCHSAA 4-A state soccer tournament. Nate Latigue scored the winning goal for Panther Creek (9-15-0) in the second 10-minute extra period.

Panther Creek beat Greater Neuse champion Clayton 4-1 in the first round Oct. 30, thanks to a pair of goals from Nate Latigue and one each from Gabe Latigue and Michael Zerman.

Panther Creek next will play reigning state champion Broughton (24-0-1) tonight, Wednesday, in Raleigh.

Falcons blitz Sanford

Green Hope rolled over Fayetteville Sanford 4-0 Saturday in its second-round playoff soccer game. The Falcons scored all four goals in the game’s first 20 minutes.

“We didn’t know much about Sanford. I think their record was 22-1 going in. Anytime you’re playing a playoff game, you take whoever you’re playing very seriously,” said Green Hope coach Andrew Chadwick. “The kids were focused. An hour and 45-minute drive gave them a chance to get focused and a chance to get relaxed. We played very loose.”

Justin Smith got the barrage started and was followed by Zach Steele, Magnus Sorensen and Justin Taylor. Steele and Sorensen also had assists, and Martin Murphy had two.

The Falcons defeated Wilmington New Hanover 2-1 in their first-round game on Oct. 30. They will play their third-round game today against Leesville Road.

The Falcons beat the Pride (16-5-3) 4-1 on Aug. 22 in their season opener, but Chadwick said that result has little bearing on this meeting.

“It’ll give our boys some confidence. It’s a team we’ve beaten before and one we know we can beat, but once the whistle blows, that means nothing,” he said. “Eighty minutes after is what matters.”

Athens ousted by Capitals

Athens Drive’s season came to an end Saturday with a 3-1 loss to Broughton.

The Capitals took a 3-0 lead in the first half.

Andrew Rowland scored the lone Athens goal.

The Jaguars (12-6-4) won their first-round game 2-0 Oct. 30 at Richmond County and got goals from Omar Asad and Louis Sabourin.
