Cary resident profiled in Referee magazine
Cary resident Shana Lowther, a softball umpire and student at N.C. State University, is profiled in the September issue of Referee magazine in the Personalities Plus feature.

Lowther, who is studying aerospace engineering, recently received her private pilot’s license. She also is the first female captain of the N.C. State drum line.

In the aricle Lowther talks about her long history with softball in Cary, obtaining her pilot’s license and her second-year stint as drum-line captain.

“There’s a lot of practice involved,” she said.

Soccer fields open in Holly Springs
A ceremony marking the opening of the Rex soccer fields will be Saturday, Sept. 6, at 11 a.m. off Avent Ferry Road on the east side of G.B. Alford Highway. Youth soccer matches will follow the ceremony.

Three soccer fields for the Town of Holly Springs’ athletic programs have been built on approximately seven acres that Rex Healthcare is allowing the town to use free of charge. The fields’ opening comes three months after completion of a three-year property license agreement, which can be canceled by the town or by Rex.

The seven acres are part of a larger tract where Rex has announced plans for healthcare facilities.
