The Sanderson Spartans executed a “perfect effort” according to coach Jason Tindal in defeating Athens Drive 46-34 on Friday in a nonconference football matchup.

Jeff Massey and Travis Trumps accounted for 518 of the Spartans’ 557 rushing yards in the victory. Trumps ran for 258 yards, while Massey scored five touchdowns, four of them coming in the second half. Massey had 225 yards in the second half.

Trumps’ 10-yard touchdown run following a 15-yard dash on a crucial fourth down sealed the win for Sanderson, which improved to 3-1.

“That was a pure Spartan effort up front by our offensive line,” Tindal said. “Take a look at their uniform, they came to a war out there.

“The main thing was this was a perfect effort, which is all we ask them to do.”

The game actually started perfectly for Athens Drive (0-3). Quarterback Ross Snotherly threw a beautiful 80-yard bomb to Phillip Barren on the game’s first play to give the Jaguars 7-0 lead.

Barren was the Athens star of the game, as he added another score in the second quarter on a 92-yard kickoff return and then set up a Jaguars touchdown in the fourth quarter with a 41-yard punt return.

Phillip had a really good game,” Athens Drive coach Jeff Smouse said.

“He missed our last game (against Enloe), but we tried to move him around today and we really hope to get him the ball more.”

The score was tied 13-13 at intermission.

Massey immediately gave the Spartans the lead on the first play of the third quarter, a 55-yard run up the middle untouched.

Athens blocked the extra point and then scored on its first possession of the second half, a 4-yard run by Darius Williams, to give the Jaguars the lead at 20-19.

Trumps scored on the following drive, an 11-play, 80-yard marathon, and although the Jaguars stayed close, Sanderson never gave back the lead.
