The Green Hope tennis team improved to 8-0 with three wins last week.
The Falcons won both their Tri-Eight Conference matches, over Fuquay-Varina and Lee County on Sept. 4 and Sept 5, respectively, 9-0. They also beat Wakefield 8-1 in a nonconference match Thursday.
The Wakefield match was the first Green Hope did not win 9-0 since Aug. 24, when the Falcons beat Middle Creek 5-4.
“We had a good week with three solid victories,” said Green Hope coach Andrew Tuttle. “Winning our conference is an important goal, but we also like to play well against nonconference competition to prepare ourselves for the playoffs. Wakefield is a good team and I’m glad we had a chance to schedule them this year. This should help us be ready for our upcoming matches with Athens Drive and Middle Creek.”
Green Hope’s Calle Kucharski, Taylor Gibson, Kayla Stokes, Lindsay Cline and Brianna Steele all won their three matches in straight sets last week.
Yeshi Xie defeated Wakefield’s Charlotte Steddum 7-5, 4-6, 10-5. In her other two matches, Xie won both without losing a game.
Holly Springs tennisThe Holly Springs girls’ tennis team won its fifth straight match after defeating Greater Neuse River Conference opponent Smithfield-Selma 5-4 on Thursday.
Colleen Henke (7-6, 6-3), Casey Peterson (6-1, 6-3), Laura Gazzard (6-1, 6-0) and Jasmine Brown (6-1, 6-4) won their singles matches.
Peterson teamed with Wesley Martinez to win 8-4 at No. 2 doubles, and Gazzard and Brown won No. 3 doubles 8-3.
Also last week, the Golden Hawks (5-1) beat Knightdale 9-0 in a GNRC match. Holly Springs won all six singles matches in straight sets and all three doubles matches without losing a game.
Cary Academy field hockeyThe Cary Academy field hockey team traveled to Durham Jordan and earned its first road win 3-0 on Sept. 4.
Ava Britt opened the scoring at the nine-minute mark, assisted by Kelsey Parker and Madison Slate.
With five minutes left in the half, Kelly Bolick scored off a rebound, which was sent on goal by Tyler Powell and Slate.
In the second half, Amy Nunez connected on a pass from Britt and Parker to beat the goalie on the right side.
The Chargers (4-4) played St. Mary’s on Tuesday (results were not available at press time). They next play today (Wednesday) at East Chapel Hill.
Panther Creek soccerThe Panther Creek boys’ soccer team evened its record at 4-4 thanks to a 3-0 win against Northern Durham on Thursday.
Nate Latigue scored twice and Gabe Latigue scored once for the Catamounts. Adrian Walton had an assist. Panther Creek goalkeeper Ryan Duvall earned his first shutout of the season.
“We started off slowly tonight, but I am pleased with the overall effort and result,” said Panther Creek coach Todd Schuler. “The biggest thing is we have everyone back and healthy. Our starters were able to play together for the first time this season. We struggled to get in sync with each other for the first 30 minutes, but we settled in and started putting some nice combination plays together and showed some flashes of what we’re capable of.”
Tri-Eight golfAthens Drive’s Katherine Perry won her second straight Tri-Eight Conference golf match after carding a 3-under-par 32 at Lochmere on Sept. 5.
Perry helped lead the Jaguars to a first-place tie in the match, too. Along with her score, Grace Stallings shot 48 and Sydney Shackelford shot 56, giving Athens a 136 team total.
Green Hope also shot 136, thanks to Jessica Lacey (42), Lindsay Turner (46) and Andrea Estes (48).
Middle Creek’s Courtney Rousse was the only other player to break par on the afternoon. She finished at 1-under 34.
