The Green Hope boys’ cross country team won the 5 Stage Relays Saturday at Greensboro’s Hagan Stone Park. The Falcons won with a cumulative time of 40:16 to beat 3-A Mooresville by 17 seconds.

Zak Roshdy (7:52), Scott Hefner (7:58), Brian Pahle (8:06), Doug Black (8:08) and Bryan Spreitzer (8:12) ran the winning times.

Cary High’s boys finished fifth.

In the girls’ race, Cary finished second in 50:34, more than two minutes behind winner Cardinal Gibbons. Green Hope’s girls finished fourth.

More cross country: Apex senior Andie Cozzarelli finished second at Saturday’s adidas Raleigh Cross Country Invitational at SAS Soccer Park in 19:12, and the Cougars finished 10th as a team.

Cary Academy’s Rachel Park finished 11th overall in 20:05, and the Chargers finished 12th.

Athens Drive finished sixth overall, with 190 points. Scoring for the Jaguars were Emily Love (21st, 20:56), Alex Davis (33rd, 21:19), Kasey Briggs (48th, 21:50), Kristen Mooney (49th, 21:59) and Shantel Jordan (54th, 22:13).

Chapel Hill won with girls’ championship with 61 points.

In the boys’ race, Athens Drive finished seventh and Cary Academy was ninth.

Scoring for Athens Drive were Jason Froeber (37th, 17:32), Randy Griggs (46th, 17:41), Zack O’Keefe (47th, 17:44), Ethan Johnson (62nd, 18:07) and Alex Dawson (37th, 18:13).

Cary Academy’s David Dement had the best area finish. He was 14th in 16:48.

Apex finished 14th. Michael Trapp was the Cougars’ top place-winner. He came in 51st place in 17:56.

Green Hope soccer: Green Hope remained undefeated after its 2-1 win against Durham Jordan on Thursday.

After a scoreless first half, the Falcons (8-0-1) got on the board 15 minutes into the second, when Jared Girad set up Martin Murphy’s goal.

A few minutes later, Jared Dapkeviach played a ball into a gap where Stephen Clowes ran onto it and finished it past the keeper for the 2-0 lead.

Jordan got one of the goals back in the game’s final minute.

“Jordan is a very strong team and they have a lot of speed up top,” said Green Hope coach Andrew Chadwick. “They had several chances to score when we had a few breakdowns, but our goalkeeper, Alex Long was the player of the match and kept us in it to have a chance.”

Panther Creek soccer: Panther Creek suffered a 3-1 overtime defeat to Fuquay-Varina on Sept. 10.

The Catamounts outshot Fuquay 10-7 and had six corner kicks to the Bengals’ two, but that didn’t translate to a win. Adrian Walton scored the Catamounts’ lone goal in regulation.

Tied 1-1 in overtime, Fuquay’s Dylan Hornaday gave his team the lead. The Bengals tacked on an insurance goal in the second extra period.

“This was a tough loss,” said Panther Creek coach Todd Schuler, who noted this was the third time in two years these two teams played into overtime. “We played very well in stretches of this game, probably our best overall effort of the season. We were able to control play at times against a very good Fuquay team and create a number of quality scoring opportunities. I thought we deserved better tonight.”

Holly Springs tennis: Holly Springs won its sixth and seventh straight match last week after conference wins over Southeast Raleigh and Garner.

The Golden Hawks (7-1, 7-0 in the Greater Neuse River Conference) beat Southeast 9-0 on Sept. 10 and Garner 7-2 on Sept. 12.

Collen Henke, Casey Peterson, Allison Johnson and Laura Gazzard won both their matches in singles play.

Shaw new CA coach: Kimberly Shaw is the new Cary Academy girls’ basketball coach. Shaw is in her second year at the school. Last year, she was the JV girls’ basketball and JV volleyball coach.

“Last year, we had two people who carried the whole team,” Shaw said. “This year it’s going to be different — everyone has to contribute.”

Shaw said she is looking forward to seeing players mature and improve throughout the season, which begins in November. Shaw will also be accompanied by John Hooker, who will serve as assistant coach for the varsity team.

“I’m excited for my team,” Shaw said. “I’m excited that they’re excited.”
