Falcons go the distance again
APEX — Saturday’s Bojangles/Apex Lions Relays added another chapter to the ongoing epic involving male distance runners from Green Hope, Broughton and Enloe.The Falcons’ domination en route to first place in the 4x1600 relay in 18:14.6 — 14 seconds ahead of runner-up Broughton, which preceded third place Enloe (18:41.2) — marked the third defining encounter among the teams this school year. Green Hope claimed the Oct. 27 4-A Mideast cross country regional at WakeMed Soccer Park, with Enloe second and Broughton third. One week later, the Falcons were third behind Broughton and Enloe, respectively, in the N.C. High School Athletic Association state championship meet.Each school’s top three cross country finishers are underclassmen.Cary girls take 4x800No single event is more synonymous with a particular school than the 4x800 relay is to the Cary girls. Imps coach Jerry Dotson could spend an afternoon recounting his various quartets’ decades-spanning success in indoor and outdoor versions of this event, which Cary claimed Saturday in 9:43.6.Apex girls thrive in fieldKeep an eye on the field events during Wednesday’s Tri-Eight conference meet. The Apex girls (39 points overall, third on Saturday) tallied 20 points alone in field events, including Anna Sterlina’s pole vaulting title (9-6) over Cassie Crawford (Panther Creek) by fewer jumps. Sterlina’s teammate Kerri Sackmanm was fifth. The Cougars’ Jaimie Brown took third in the triple jump.In other field events, Athens Drive’s Nancy McLeod won the discus (112-7) by nearly 10 feet ahead of Jacksonville’s Marcia Higgins (102-10). Tyler Ford of Cary Academy earned silver in the long jump (19-6.5) behind Crishawn Williams (19-7.25) of team champion Southeast Raleigh.M&Ms help ImpsCary’s Amanuel Micael and Michael Graham were the only teammates to take first and second in any event Saturday. The pair posted winning marks of 6-6 and 6-4, respectively, in the boys’ high jump and accounted for 18 of the Imps’ 25 points.
