Davie Halts Cary's Mat Run

NCHSAA 4-A Dual Team Tournament

Championship -- Saturday, Feb. 11

MOCKSVILLE -- After a stunning 34-32 NCHSAA 4-A Dual Team Championship loss at Cary High a year ago, Davie County High coach Buddy Lowery hoped his War Eagles would get another crack at the Imps -- this year, at home.

Lowery got his wish when Timmy Allen pinned Sean McHue at 189 pounds to lift the War Eagles to a 35-23 lead that clinched the state title. Cary then forfeited the 215 match for a final 41-23 score.

Coach Jerry Winterton said he was disappointed that his team, which finished 39-1, let a repeat championship slip through its fingers.

"We really didn't wrestle that well; we had our hands cuffed all night," Winterton said. "We won the flip of the coin all the way through the playoffs until tonight, and that was huge for them."

The Imps were also saddled with a spate of injuries, the worst being the loss of 171-pounder Sam Hoerdemann to a shoulder injury in the first round. Hoerdemann was ranked fifth in the 4-A class at the time.

But McHue was hampered by a broken and tender right hand throughout the tournament and 275-pound freshman Eloheim Palma did not wrestler after the opening round.

Still the Imps managed to get to their 11th championship in 17 years, and was not about to make excuses. Waiting for the Imps in Mocksville was a hungry Davie County (42-1), which had also lost a stunning title match to Cary in 1993.

Winterton said that if he had to lose to anybody, he was glad it was to Lowery.

"He runs a class program here," Winterton said. "He's one of the few coaches I can go into his office before a match like this and just sit down and talk about things."

Lowery said the victory was sweet, especially after last year's near win.

"We came within 28 seconds of wrestling to win it last year," said Lowery, who led the War Eagles to a state championship in 1994. "But we've been here before, and we knew what we needed to do to win it. It was really satisfying to do this here in front of our crowd."

The match began at 275 pounds, and Davie's Garrett Parks rode Luke Wallace for a 4-0 decision. The win was the start of something big for Davie.

Davie's Kyle Smith recorded a pin at 103, then teammates Russell Hilton and Adam McIllwain followed with a major decision and a decision at 112 and 119, respectively, to push the War Eagles ahead 16-0.

"That was a tough start for us; we really couldn't win this match tonight with the way things started out," Winterton said. "When 103 goes the way it did, and 119 ends up like that, those were matches we hoped we could pull out. But Davie was a well-prepared team and they just flat out-wrestled us out there."

Justin Koren finally broke the ice for the Imps at 125, but after taking a 4-1 decision from Rusty O'Connor.

Davie won the next two matches, a forfeit at 130 and a major decision by Chris Ange over freshman Gabe Brotzman at 135 to push the lead to 26-3.
Winterton said the forfeit at 130 was a strategic move that didn't work out.

"We had to gamble then and moved our 30-pounder away from Hollifield. There was no sense sending someone out there to get pinned and get this crowd all fired up," he said. "Strategy wise, we did what we could. I can't look back and say we should have done this or we should have done that."

Winterton said despite the large deficit, he pushed his wrestlers on.

"I told them we were still in this, and we were working into the strongest part of our lineup," Winterton said. "With a few pins, we're right back in it."

After Brotzman's loss, Cary responded.

Nick Koren, the reigning 130-pound individual state champion, pinned Joel Barnette at 140. Thomas Ferguson followed with a technical fall at 145, and James Abbott beat Patrick O'Connor with a 9-0 major decision at 152 to cut Davie's lead to 26-17.

"I thought we did a good job of coming back when we needed to, and kept our heads up when we were down," Nick Koren said. "But we needed pins and didn't get them, and got pinned where we shouldn't have gotten pinned."

After a decision win at 160, Davie's Jaspen Gray only needed a decision at 171 to clinch the title. Gray, though, was pinned late in the third period by Cary's Long Wang.

"Coach said we needed a win, and I tried to do what I could for the team," Wang said.

Winterton was proud of his team for fighting back from the deficit.

"James Abbott wrestled well, Tommy Freeman is a JV kid filling in, and Long Wang did a great job getting that pin to keep us alive for another few minutes. Nick and Ferguson are just two guys I know I can always count on, and Sean wrestled an outstanding match against Allen. We just didn't get the breaks we needed to win."

NCHSAA 4-A Dual Team Tournament

Eastern Regional -- Thursday, Feb. 9

Cary High coach Jerry Winterton could not remember the last time one of his teams looked as uninspired as the Imps did in the opening rounds of the NCHSAA 4-A Dual Team Wrestling Tournament on Tuesday night.

The Imps somehow managed to win twice, though, and advance to Thursday's third round.

"I told them not to worry about Thursday night because I knew they would not wrestle that poorly two nights in a row and that when it comes time to perform when it matters most, they will find a way to win," Winterton said.

Winterton, in his 25th year coaching the Imps, was right.

The Imps went out and first defeated nemesis Durham Riverside High, 35-27, and then Wilmington Laney High, 33-25, to win their 11th Eastern Regional title in 17 years and a trip to their fifth straight 4-A championship.

Cary (39-0) will face Davie County (41-1) in Mocksville on Saturday at 4 p.m. The matchup is a repeat of last year's 4-A final that Cary won.

The championship appearance will be the Imps' 11th, and third against Davie County. The Imps, who have won five dual team titles, also beat the War Eagles for the title in 1993.

The championship has mostly been a series of frustrations for Davie County, which will make its seventh appearance and fourth in the last eight seasons. Davie is 1-5 in previous championship appearances.

Even before the tournament began, Winterton was concerned with how his team matched up against both Riverside and Laney.

"I thought where we were strong, they were a little stronger," he said. "I think we were just more balanced across the board, strong enough to overcome any runs they made at us. We stayed off our backs and then got some big efforts when we need them."

Along the way, Cary got its share of good fortune.

First, Cary won both coin flips to decide which team would send out its wrestlers in odd and even matches. Against Riverside, Winterton was able to forfeit the 140-pound match to top-ranked Colton Palmer with a 12-0 lead.

"I just didn't want them to gain any momentum," said Winterton, who could then trot out top-ranked Thomas Ferguson at 145 to pick up a technical fall.

Against Laney, the Buccaneers went out at 135 in the first match and forfeited. Winterton then could bump Nick Koren to 140 where he won by forfeit and Ferguson to 145 where he got a pin to give the Imps a quick 18-0 lead.

Second, Cary got some stellar performances from some unheralded performers.

Freshman Gabe Brotzman's pin at 130 pounds against Riverside set a tone, Winterton said. The win gave the Imps a quick 6-0 lead and woke up the partisan crowd.

Long Wang's and Sean McHue's pins at 171 and 189, respectively, also contributed to Cary building a 32-9 lead that proved insurmountable. Against Laney, sophomore Lawrence White's 17-14 decision at 119 gave the Imps a five-point cushion going into the final two matches.

And third, wrestling at home at the Cary High Ninth Grade Center did not hurt.

"Our guys fed off [the crowd]," Winterton said. "If we're anywhere but here, I don't think we would have won."

While the Riverside match held plenty of history between the two teams -- their 12th postseason meeting -- the Imps were meeting Laney for the first time.

Cary built a quick 21-0 lead on Laney thanks to two Buccaneer forfeits, a pin by Thomas Ferguson at 145 pounds and James Abbott's decision at 152 pounds. From there, the Imps' lead was whittled away. Three straight decision losses, followed by pins at 215 and 275, evened the match at 21.

Junior 103-pounder Joey Farnsworth then pinned Brendan Hou in 59 seconds to give the Imps a cushion they never relinquished. Laney's J.C. Wagner won a major decision at 112, but then Lawrence White won a 17-14 decision to give Cary a 30-25 lead.

The night's most compelling matchup proved to be the decisive.

Cary sophomore Justin Koren was matched against Laney senior Ben Bergeron, a three-time state qualifier, who wrestled at Cary High as a sophomore and part of his junior season, at 125 pounds.

In their last meeting at last year's NCHSAA 4-A Individual Tournament, Bergeron defeated Koren 4-2. This time, Bergeron took a quick 2-0 lead before Koren manhandled him en route to an 8-3 decision that clinched the title.

"That was big, but Gabe [at 130 pounds in the 14th match] had beaten their guy four times previously, so I wasn't that worried," Winterton said. "I'm just glad we didn't have to go that far."

Notes and Numbers: Cary senior 171-pounder Sam Hoerdemann, who suffered a left shoulder injury in the opening round, and freshman 275-pounder Eloheim Palma, who has been hampered by late-season injuries, are probable starters on Saturday, according to Winterton. ... Cary's win over Riverside improved its postseason record against the Pirates to 7-5 and snapped a three-match losing streak. Cary's win over Laney was the two teams' first meeting. ... Thursday's two wins improved Cary to 62-11 in 17 state tournament appearances. Saturday's championship appearance will be Cary's 11th. The Imps are 5-5 in championship matches. ... Cary's Nick Koren and Thomas Ferguson are a combined 110-2 this season, but doling out praise tends to slip Winterton's mind. "They're so good, you just expect them to do their job," he said. "You almost take their winning for granted." ... Cary was outscored 27-12 and was just 2-8 from 160 pounds through 275.

NCHSAA 4-A Dual Team Tournament

Eastern Regional -- Tuesday, Feb. 7

Cary High sophomore Jared Abbott was at his boiling point, which meant trouble for Leesville Road High in the second round of the NCHSAA 4-A Dual Team Wrestling Tournament on Tuesday night.

The Pride had won four of the first five matches against the top-ranked Imps and led 18-6 when Abbott took the mat for his 112-pound match against fellow sophomore Richard Coakley.

"I just couldn't believe we were behind like that," said Abbott, "so I just said 'I can't let this happen.' I was mad and when I get mad, I generally do my best."

Abbott, No. 9 in N.C. Mat's 4-A rankings, needed just 1:13 to record a pin over the 12th-ranked Coakley. The pin woke the Imps from their night-long stupor and sparked them to a 41-34 victory at the Cary High Ninth Grade Center.

Cary, the reigning 4-A champion, tussled with Northern Durham High in the opening round before winning 45-24. Leesville easily dispatched of Clayton High 58-24 in the first round.

"I would like to think Leesville Road and Northern Durham had something to do with us looking so bad," said Winterton of the Imps' opponents, who were ranked ninth and eighth, respectively, in the state by Mat News. "Basically we had two or three guys who looked flat and that made the rest of the team look bad."

The Imps improved to 37-0 and advance to Thursday's sectionals, while Leesville Road capped off its best dual season at 35-10. Northern Durham finished 28-9; Clayton 14-6.

Better than anticipated: So much for that .500 season.

Green Hope High completed its dual wrestling season Tuesday night with its 28th win of the season before falling to Durham Riverside High in the second round of the NCHSAA 4-A Dual Team Tournament.

The Falcons' win total is the second highest in school history and its second round playoff appearance was the program's third.

Those numbers came as a surprise to Green Hope coach Chip Bunn, whose team beat host West Johnston High, 36-19, in the first round before falling to Riverside, 60-15, in the second round.

"Going into the season, if you would have asked me what I thought our chances were, I would have said we're looking at a .500 dual team this year," said Bunn, whose team finished 28-10. "We graduated six starters and didn't know really how we'd fill those holes. But the sophomores wrestled, as a group, much better than we anticipated."

The Falcons started six seniors and eight sophomores against West Johnston.

Bunn credited the rise in wrestlers in the Green Hope program for helping to fill in those holes with younger, but somewhat experienced wrestlers. The Falcons finished the season with 52 wrestlers in the program.

"As we continue to have some success, we've started to generate a lot of interest," Bunn said. "And being the only Wake County school with a middle school with its own wrestling program [Davis Drive] is helping us as well."

Healthy, but injured: With the score tied at 18 against Cary, Leesville Road coach Jason Wyss opted not to send out second-ranked junior Billy Edwards against third-ranked sophomore Justin Koren at 125 pounds.

Then Edwards, who had recorded a pin in 1:40 in the opening round, was not bumped to 130 pounds, but instead remained on the Pride sideline.

Asked afterward if Edwards was injured, Wyss said he decided to give Edwards the match off.

"What do they call it in hockey, a healthy scratch?" Wyss said. "He was a healthy scratch. We'll see Koren at the regionals."

Wyss said he was a little excited when his team jumped on Cary 18-0 on the road, but realized that the match, which started at 171 pounds, would come back around to the heart of the Imps' lineup where second-ranked Nick Koren, top-ranked Thomas Ferguson and fifth-ranked James Abbott were situated at 135, 140 and 145 pounds, respectively.

Keeping it real: Northern Durham coach Matt Brown wished he could have said he had five starters out of his lineup against Cary, but admitted his Knights were just outmuscled.

"Cary is Cary," he said. "You don't need to know who [Winterton] is going to send out there because you know they're going to be well-prepared."

Brown, though, was pleased with the progress his team has made since a 52-21 loss to Cary earlier in the season. The Knights will lose five seniors, but a second straight postseason appearance has Brown, who is in his first year as head coach after four years of being an assistant, believing the program is back on the upswing.

"Oh, definitely we're back on the map," he said. "We've got kids who are committed to the program and who are doing things in the off-season to improve."

Prior to 2005, the Knights' last postseason appearance was 1995. In 1992, Northern Durham lost to Hillsborough Orange in the Eastern Regional final.

Among the top Knights returning next season will be Grayson Mills (junior, 119 pounds, ranked 11th), Demario Leathers (sophomore, 125, fourth) and Charlie Waters (sophomore, 135, seventh).

Numbers and notables: By stepping onto the mat Tuesday night and winning, Cary added to its list of state records. The Imps made their 17th consecutive postseason appearance and the two wins improved their postseason record to 60-11. By comparison, Leesville Road and Northern Durham have combined for 12 state appearances and nine postseason wins. ...

Cary improved its postseason record to 2-1 against Northern Durham and 2-0 against Leesville Road. The Knights defeated the Imps 30-29 in the second round of the inaugural 4-A Dual Team Tournament in 1990. ...

Wyss described Cary as being two-horse deep throughout its lineup, and it was evident in the opening two rounds. The Imps trotted out different wrestlers at five weight classes -- 275, 189, 171, 135 and 112 -- on the night and went 5-5 overall.
"Their reserves would be starters for most varsity programs," Wyss said. ...

Cary 171-pounder Sam Hoerdemann, ranked third in the state, suffered a left shoulder injury in his match against Leesville's Brian O'Boyle. Hoerdemann had to injury forfeit the match and was expected to have further tests done on Wednesday. His status for the rest of the postseason was undetermined, Winterton said.

Countdown To No. 1
When the 17th NCHSAA 4-A Dual Team Tournament opens on Tuesday, Feb. 7, Cary High will make its 17th straight appearance. Quite simply, the Imps have made the tournament a natural extension of their season.

In the tournament's 16-year history, no team has made more appearances, won more matches (58), made more championship appearances (10) or won more titles (five).

The undefeated and defending champion Imps enter this year's tournament as the logical favorite to win a sixth title. Leading up to this year's tournament, The Cary News has ranked the five best Cary High dual tournament teams under 25th-year coach Jerry Winterton and will count them down each day (No. 5, Feb. 3; No. 4, Feb. 4; No. 3, Feb. 5; No. 2, Feb. 6; and No. 1, Feb. 7).

Keep in mind, the Imps had won three NCHSAA 4-A Individual Tournament titles before the inception of the state dual team tournament. Long-time observers of the program suggest several of those teams would have won titles, as well. Those teams, though, have been eliminated from the debate.

Green Hope's Andre Leaving Marks Behind
Senior Chris Andre may be leaving Green Hope High after this year, but his name will be staying with the school's wrestling program for quite some time.

"I think he's definitely left his mark," Falcons coach Chip Bunn said. "There will be a lot of people who will see his name and know him."

As the team's co-captain, Andre has been one of the program's most dominant wrestlers since first stepping on the mat as a freshman in 2002.

Heading into Saturday's Tri-Seven Conference Tournament – and then the postseason -- Andre has already set the school record for career wins with 178 and is ranked No. 5 in N.C. Mat's Super 32 4-A 125-pound weight class rankings.

But that's just the beginning. He is also No. 1 on Green Hope's list for career pins (80) and career points (889). This year alone, Andre leads the team in takedowns (71) and wins (41). In the Green Hope's Six-Team Rotational Tournament on Jan. 28, Andre set a school-record for takedowns in a single match with 11.

Needless to say, Andre has guaranteed himself a long history in Green Hope's record books. Yet, he remains humble, as if his achievements are just par for the course.

"It's been fun," he said. "There haven't really been any highlights for me, though. I'm just excited to graduate."

On Wednesday, Feb. 1, the Falcons defeated Athens Drive High 45-27 to bump their record to 27-9 overall and 5-1 in the Tri-Seven Conference. The win also punched Green Hope's ticket to a fourth consecutive NCHSAA 4-A Dual Team Tournament, which opens Tuesday, Feb. 7

"We've been pretty successful," Bunn said. "We've had some young guys and some experienced guys, so it's been a learning experience for a lot of them."

Against Athens, Andre came away with a win by forfeit, while sophomore teammate Scott Norris, who is ranked No. 4 in N.C. Mat's Super 32 4-A 119-pound weight class, gained his team-leading 27th pin. Bunn attributes much of his team's success to the performances of Andre and Norris.

Green Hope's lone league loss was to eventual Tri-Seven champion Cary back in December. That match also marked Andre's only individual loss -- to currently third-ranked Justin Koren

"I'm looking forward to wrestling Justin Koren again," said Andre, who may get his wish at Saturday's Tri-Seven Conference Tournament at Athens Drive High. "Maybe I can get a chance to redeem myself."

Andre's final prep season may be winding down, hopefully ending with in a state championship, but he eyes wrestling at the college level, as well.

"I'm looking at possibly wrestling at N.C. State," he said. "If not State, maybe Charlotte."

Andre said a college decision will not become official until April, so in the mean time he is putting his energy toward the postseason.

"The rankings and the stats don't mean much to me," Andre said. "They don't mean anything until after states. That's when it counts."

As Cary High wrestlers and coaches returned to Winston-Salem's Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum on Saturday morning, they did so knowing the second day of the NCHSAA 4-A Individual Wrestling Tournament could be especially long for all of the wrong reasons.

Having arrived with a tournament-high 12 qualifiers, the reigning champion Imps advanced only eight from Friday's opening day. Of the eight, five had advanced to the morning's semifinal rounds. Still, Cary was in second place behind a surprising Winston-Salem Mt. Tabor High that qualified seven wrestlers and advanced six to the semifinals.

"Going in with 12 qualifiers, I thought we had a good chance of winning," Imps coach Jerry Winterton said. "But when we lost four guys the first day without points, we were thrown into the pack with all the other teams."

And when the Imps advanced just two of their five semifinalists, and Mt. Tabor three of its semifinalists, "I put my head down and thought it was over," Winterton said.

With many of the Imps having to work their way back through the consolation brackets, where one more loss before the placement round means elimination, Cary rallied with a vengeance.

The Imps overtook the Spartans in the consolation semifinals and put the final touches on the school's 14th state title when Nick Koren at 135 pounds and Thomas Ferguson at 140 pounds won state titles.

When the totals were announced, Cary had amassed 122 points -- an overwhelming 48 points through the consolation brackets -- and won by seven over Mt. Tabor, which produced two individual champions. Boone Watauga High was third with 83 points, followed by East Gaston High with 79 and Davie County High, this year's 4-A dual team champion, with 73.

"I knew what Mt. Tabor was capable of, but I guess I didn't realize exactly what my guys were," Winterton said. "They were just unbelievable."

Locally, Green Hope High tied for 45th with five points, while Athens Drive High and Middle Creek High both did not score.

"I have never had a team that responded like this one did in the consolations," said Winterton, who has guided the Imps to eight individual tournament titles. "We just tore through them."

The Imps won 14 of 22 consolation matches as Joey Farnsworth (103 pounds), Justin Koren (125) and James Abbott (145) placed third, Trevor Dixon (215) placed fourth and Gabe Brotzman (130) placed sixth.

While all individual wins provided necessary points to the Imps' narrow victory, Winterton estimated that the title hinged on six or seven unlikely wins.

-- There was Farnsworth, a junior, pinning Durham Riverside High's Shane Wilder in the consolation finals and then earning a 4-2 decision over Davie County's Kyle Smith for third place. Wilder had beaten Farnsworth three times this season, while Smith had pinned him in the 4-A dual team championship.

-- There was Justin Koren having to overcome the disappointment of a semifinal loss to win the season against Northern Durham High's Demario Leathers for third place. The wrestlers had split their previous two matches.

"Justin worked so hard to win a state title that when he lost, it was pretty disappointing," Winterton said. "So I had to tell him there were other important things here."

-- There was senior Abbott pinning Wakefield senior Grant Harris in the consolation semifinals and then Mt. Tabor's Craig Brown also for a third-place finish. Harris had beaten Abbott twice this season and had not been pinned since his sophomore season.

"And if he loses to Brown, that would be like turning four or five points right there," Winterton said.

Three weeks ago, Winterton had addressed his team in no uncertain terms, telling them the postseason was time when champions stepped up.

"James knew he wasn't going to wrestle at the next level, so he took that to heart and really finished his career strong," Winterton said.

-- Then there was junior Trevor Dixon, who entered with the second most losses in the 16-wrestler 215-pound bracket (17) and bum knees.

Dixon lost his first-round match and then had to win four straight matches before taking fourth place. Along the way, Dixon major-decisioned Fuquay-Varina High's Chad McDuffie, whom Dixon had lost to three times earlier this season, and Mt. Tabor's Michael Cooper in the consolation semifinals.

"He was like a whole other person in that body," said Winterton of Dixon. "I would like to know what got into him the last couple of weeks. I'm sure he was disappointed to have such high expectations for the season and then to have the record he did coming in, and injuries to his knees didn't help. But something turned around."

The points that Brotzman and 275-pounder Eloheim Palma earned along the way also helped put the Imps in position to win a title, but ultimately the deciding points were scored by reigning champion Nick Koren and Ferguson, a twosome that combined for a 136-2 record this season.

Koren pinned his first three opponents before winning an 8-5 decision over Fayetteville 71st High's Ryan Morris.

"That was my goal coming in, to pin all four guys," said Koren, who became the program's fourth two-time state champion. "But I ended up with three; I'm still happy with what I did."

Though a marked man for most of the season, Koren admitted to feeling less pressure this year.

"I was second [in the state] as a freshman and had to forfeit a match as a sophomore, so last year I really felt the pressure to finally get the state championship," Koren said.

Though reigning champion Colton Palmer of Durham Riverside High had suffered a season-ending injury to Ferguson in the Mideast Regional a week earlier, the path to a state title was no easier for Ferguson, who beat a couple of No. 2 seeds and then Hope Mills South View's Luke Cameron 8-2 for the title.

Koren may have pinned his way to the championship, but Ferguson was a bit more methodical, especially in the final.

"Once I got my hips over his when he went low, I knew I was in control," he said. "If I get on top of you, with my feet, there's no question I'm in control. My feeling is, when I get you on the bottom, it's like quicksand for you. I've got that much confidence in my feet and my ability."

So for a team that on paper appeared to be an overwhelming favorite, the Imps took an unusual route to winning the title -- a route that even surprised their coach.

"If you had told me beforehand that we would win the title and that's the way we would win it, I probably would have said 'No way,'" Winterton said.
